Garden centers and plant nurseries sell annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, vegetables and houseplants, along with soil, mulch, fertilizer, pots and tools. Independent nurseries often grow part of their own stock and carry varieties that do well in the local climate, while big-box garden departments compete on price for common plants. Wholesale nurseries and growers sell to landscapers and sometimes to the public at volume prices; tree nurseries sell balled-and-burlapped and container trees and can deliver and plant large specimens. Specialty growers focus on bonsai, cactus and succulents, orchids or native plants, and hydroponics stores sell lights, nutrients and systems for growing indoors.

Mechanicsburg is in Pennsylvania, in the Northeast, where four distinct seasons shape local life: hot humid summers, snowy winters that can close businesses for a day, and a dense pattern of towns where walking, transit and street parking all matter. Getting around Mechanicsburg is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. We were there for the butterfly release. Very nice except their microphone didn't work so almost nobody could understand what she said about the release. We had the water ice, which was great and strolled the grounds. Please fix the audio system for next year.

Today was my first time at Ashcombe's. I had lunch at their cafe with my sister. We checked out all of their perennial plants and annuals. We saw items there that we've never seen at any other nursery. All of the staff was very helpful. When I ordered my lunch, they could not have been better at accommodating all my requests. They were so helpful A+++ I asked questions from the staff about some of their perennials that I was looking for. Guess what again A+++ customer service. I bought a planter that was beautiful. Paid for it and put it in my car. Then, when I came back to shop for more, I saw the same planter same price, but I liked the look of it better. So I asked ,if I could take the one from my car, bring it back and take the other one that I liked better. Dieadre was so kind and accommodating. She actually came along with me to my car to get the one that I just purchased. She allowed me to bring it back and get the one that I preferred. Who allows that? Who does that? I'll tell you who, Ashcombe staff. A+++ I needed to write this to tell everyone. I've never experienced that kind of customer service anywhere, and I mean anywhere. They made me feel like I was their best love

Be cautious buying houseplants here. Everytime I have come here I have found mealybug and spidermite infestations. Their succulent section is completely infested with Mother of Thousands, and nobody seems to care as I see the same plants and infestations everytime I visit. Their succulents are always etiolated and today I found many moldy and half dead cacti. Not only that, they keep a ton of unhealthy and partially rotten plants. You'd think they would rotate out dead plants or move them to clearance before they get that bad. I think at this point its better to skip Ashcombe and just drive the couple extra minutes to Stauffers, I've never seen these kinds of quality issues there.

Always worth a visit when you are in the area. Great selection of flowers (of course), annuals and perrenials. Check the time of the year and there may be some very nice clearance specials. The shrubs and trees here are more expensive than most other places, but take a good look at the shape of the plant- they have the best specimens. Their buyers have a very good eye. When you need to place a tree in a high visibility spot, get it right the first time, spend a little more for a better plant. There are nice baked goods here and some good vintage sodas to wash those down here in their little cafe. They have some very cool and cute garden ornaments and lots of seeds!
